How your contribution impacted 4-Hers
Each year, nearly 60 Dawson County 4-Hers receive an average of $225 in additional premiums to help offset costs of animals, feed, supplies, etc. for their livestock projects. In addition, the Livestock Premium fund - Dawson County 4-H sponsors the livestock champion and reserve champion trophies. Due to the rising prices of feed and livestock supplies, the Livestock Premium Fund committee would like to increase the 4-H Premiums going forward.
How it began
In 2004, the Dawson County 4-H Council began selecting champions and awarding additional premiums through Dawson County 4-H Livestock Premiums to 4-Hers participating in the beef, sheep, dairy, and swine areas. In 2007, bucket calves and goats, as well as the corresponding showmanship classes of all the species received premiums.
The purpose of the enhancements to premiums is to encourage projects related to large animal agriculture and to better reward participants for the time and expenses dedicated to these projects. Livestock Premium Fund - Dawson County 4-H has partnered with the Lexington Community Foundation to administer the premiums.
