Lexington TeamMates Mentoring Program 2024 Update

Tom and Nancy Osborne founded the TeamMates Mentoring Program in 1991 to provide support and encouragement to school-aged youth. The goal of the program is to see youth graduate from high school and pursue post-secondary education. To reach this goal, youth meet once a week with a caring adult who serves as a mentor.

The Lexington TeamMates Mentoring Program was started in 1998 and continues today with the support of the community. The Lexington TeamMates program serves over 30 students from Lexington Middle School and Lexington High School. We believe that mentoring is a powerful tool to help kids succeed in life. Mentors give youth a sense of hope, purpose, and vision.

For the 2024-2025 school year, we are excited to match new mentors and mentees throughout the school year. We are also excited about all our group activities and volunteer opportunities we do throughout the year. Please refer to the snapshot of 2023-2024 to see what activities we did throughout the school year

Snapshot of 2023-2024 Academic Year

Over the last full school year, the Lexington TeamMates Mentoring Program was able to pair 5 new mentor /mentee matches in our program. Coming into this year, 93% of our matched mentees said they have a sense of hopefulness about their future. 100% of our mentors say they leave their weekly school meetings with their mentees in a better mood and are more engaged when they return to work. Our mentees and mentors are both benefiting from being a part of TeamMates.

We were able to get out in the community as well and had some fun. In the fall of 2023, we had our Back to School donut party, walked in the homecoming parade, held a movie night at the Majestic Theater, and also did our annual tailgate fundraiser at the Lexington High School basketball game. During the Spring of 2024, we also traveled to Kearney for TeamMates night at a Storm Hockey Game, had a Breakfast celebration to honor our Mentees and their Mentors, completed a community service project for Lexington Regional Hospital, and had an end-of-the-school year bowling party. We were very honored to have 1 of our Senior Mentees receive one of the Nation TeamMates Scholarships and 3 of our seniors receive the local TeamMates Scholarship.

Moving Forward

It is the mission of TeamMates to positively impact the world by inspiring youth to reach their full potential through mentoring. With that said the TeamMates of Lexington Program has a goal to match 10 new mentees with mentors from the community each year. That means we need caring adults to help inspire the current students who are still waiting to be matched in our program. These students range from 6th graders to 10th graders. They have hopes of being football players, computer engineers, artists, musicians, physical therapists, teachers, and so much more. These students are at the top of most of their classes, but they need an additional caring adult in their lives to help them guide them through high school, graduation, and planning what’s next.
