Help Bring Polar to Safety in the US

$205

$600 goal

Polar is one of 24 cats sitting in a shelter in Central Ukraine not understanding what has happened. She was a loved family member, cuddled, fed, and safe in Eastern Ukraine.  Then the bombs started, and the people fled.  A leader in the community reached out to Breaking the Chains International (BTC), a UK-based group of ex-military vets who rescue animals in conflict areas, to help with owned cats.  She gathered the cats of her neighbors as the Russians closed in, while BTC snuck into the area and loaded up the cats to take them to safety. They brought them to their temporary shelter in Central Ukraine, where the kitties have been waiting since October of last year.  The humans had hoped to one day be reunited with the cats, but at this point, that’s not going to happen.  Life so unstable for so many. These kitties are victims of the war, just like their humans.  I’m asking you to help give them the chance for safety, peace, and forever homes in the US.

Homeward Trails Animal Rescue is a 501(c)(3) organization in the DC metro area.  Longtime volunteer, Shana Aufenkamp, has been traveling to Ukraine to volunteer at the BTC shelter and is dedicated to bringing back cats to the US for adoption. The average transport cost for one cat is $600.  This covers the ground travel costs from the Ukrainian/Romanian border to Bucharest, Romanian export vet documents, cargo airfare costs, and US customs clearance on arrival. Shana will be returning in May to volunteer again at the shelter with the intent to bring back all 24 of these cats.  Only the cats that have the full $600 raised can make the return flight in May.  Please help us not leave Polar behind.  Donate here to make her American Dream possible.
